The 2018 WV State Shoot Results

Fred Dague and Alec Sauble Perfect for Singles and Doubles Titles; Scott Ross Claims Second Handicap Championship; Cameron Bailey Repeats as HAA & HOA Champion.

That could’ve been the theme for this year’s WV State Shoot, perfect. But we’re human. A change in venue after twenty nine years, everything and everyone cooperated for a very successful first WV State Shoot at Winchester Gun Club in Virginia. The weather was perfect, cooler than the week before and drier, in fact the rain held off until the last shoot offs on Sunday.

There were a lot of changes this year at the WV State Shoot along with a different venue came a different group for loading and scoring, a new cashiering system and different weather than normal and you know what, they turned out to be all good things.

The 98th annual WV State Championships were contested July 12th through the 15th the annual trek to the championships this year involved travelling to a neighboring state, Virginia. More targets were thrown than in the past ten years, one hundred and fifty eight thousand two hundred targets shot at by two hundred ninety four contestants. Preliminary Days Thursday and Friday were up over last year by more than forty percent and the Championship days up five percent.

Under beautiful skies and low humidity Fred Dague added another Singles Title with the lone 200 over the field of two hundred and six competitors, Fred’s other Singles Title in 2005 was also won with a 200 straight. In addition to Fred’s Singles Championship in 2005 and 2018, he also has a Doubles Championship in 2009, a Handicap Championship in 2007 and three High All Around Championships, back to back in 2005 and 2006 and again in 2008. Cameron Bailey and Steve Sprout broke just one less to tie for Runner up a discussion ensued between the two and Cameron would take Runnerup and Steve Class AA; Leon Lowther was Class A victor; outgoing Association Secretary Jim Schad claimed Class B; Edsel Kittle, Class C; and Gerald Narigon Class D. Category winners Lady I Jennifer Everett and Lady II Sandra Spencer both swept their respective resident categories. Sandra’s twelfth Ladies Title, starting with her first in 1980 and Jennifer’s eleventh since 2007; Collin Hopkins, Junior Gold Champion, his first; Braden Carroll claimed his second Junior title to go along with two previous Sub Junior titles; new shooter Makayla Scott, in her first year of competition, blasted a 190 to claim her first WV Sub Junior Title; Michael Wilder shot a 193 for his first WV Sub Veteran Championship; Darrel Murray may be newcomer to the Veteran Category, winning in his first year, but he is well known within the shooting community with two WV Singles Championships, two WV Handicap Championships, one WV Doubles Championship and five High All Around Champion Titles, he has held positions in the WVATA where he is currently Ex-Officio and was President for fifteen years. Morgan Lough topped the WV Sr. Veterans with a 193.

Danny Church and Bryan Davis broke 199 during Saturday’s WV Open Singles Championship. After the shoot off Danny was WV Open Champion. Bryan won the WV Open Class AA winner. Robert Chocinsky broke his first ever 100 straight at age 70 and a eventual 198 to claim WV Open Class A; Hunter Shoemaker took WV Open Class B turning in a 196; North Carolina Jr. Jacob Beauchamp breaking 197 for WV Open Class C, Zachary Harner was WV Open Class D winner with 190. Noah Gouge’s 196 was good for WV Open Junior Gold; WV Open Junior Andrew Bush’s 199 lead the Category. Nathan Basiey won WV Open Sub Junior with a 195; WV Open Lady I was Cassie Hammond; Kaylynn Hamilton claimed WV Open Lady II; WV Open Sub Vet won with a 196 of Richard Smith; WV Open Veteran carding a 199 by Glen Funkhouser while WV Open Sr Veteran Ted Carwile carded a 197 for top honors in his category. Emerson Bornman & Kaylynn Hamilton won WV Open Husband & Wife and John Thomas & Dan Wilson took the WV Open Parent Child. Fred Dague broke a 398 to win the Stephen N Harden Memorial Trophy.

A cloudy start to Sundays WV Doubles Championship couldn’t block Alec Sauble’s shinning performance, he broke them all, a perfect round, his first. Leading all competitors by one Alec, who is attending law school, was the 2014 WV Handicap Champion and the 2015 WV High All Around Champion as well as WV Jr. Champion in 2010 thru 2012 when he moved to JR. Gold dominating the category for five years 2013 thru 2017. Alec and Todd have always given us things to write about but best one wasn’t the Championships they have won, while indeed impressive with Todd’s back to back WV Singles Championships in 2014 and 2015 his WV Handicap Championship in 2010 and the HAA in 2014 no it was in 2014 when they both tied for Class B Doubles in the Class Championships here was the account in 2014:

The Class Champions for Friday are listed in the table below however one shoot-off was particularly entertaining, the Saubles’, Todd and son Alec tied for Class B doubles each with an 89. Todd wanted to carryover but Alec, sensing that dad might be wearing down in the late hour, said “Let’s Shoot-off”. Todd dropped two targets on his first post with Alec only down one, both broke all targets on the next station, Alec drops one on his 3rd and 4th post while Todd runs his next two stations. Todd, up one on Alec, appears to tighten up and loses a second target letting Alec back in and both miss a second target on the last post to tie the score and go another round. In the second shoot-off Alec appears to have the upper hand after two posts with his dad down 3 and Alec only one, they each drop one on their 3rd and 4th posts, all Alec has to do is break 3 of the next 4 to wrestle B Class from his dad and only break 2 to stay in it. Alec blasts all four and lifts his gun in triumph!...

Conflicting reports the next day had Alec spending the night outside the camper in a lounge chair. This could not be confirmed, however, Todd was seen cleaning what appeared to be smudges from the camper picture window, as if someone was looking or wanting in.

Update!! On Alec's return to the Southern Zone he was accompanied by Mrs. Sauble and Todd didn't arrive until Saturday afternoon. Hmmmm.....one can only assume Alec got to sleep in the camper all week at the Southern Zone.  It’s unknown if the experience had anything to do with Alec’s choice for his career.

Nick and I have enjoyed a friendly rivalry with Alec and Todd in the Parent Child category for the past nine years, this year they gave us an easy win when they attended a family wedding on Saturday.

Cameron Bailey, WV Doubles Champion for the last two years, broke 98 for Runner up; Russell Lillard topped Class AA with a 96; Nicholas Harden Class A; Robert Lowe Class B; Carl Rohrbough claimed Class C; and Toot Riggle winning Class D.   At the Annual Association Meeting, Brandy Hayes has taken over for Jim Schad as Secretary. We thank Jim for his ten years of service to the WVATA and look forward to working with Brandy who along with her husband Matt run the Tyler County Gun Club.

The State Team was recognized and awarded certificates and embroidered State Team Jackets donated by Russ Lillard owner of Superior Industrial Laundries of Fairmont, WV.

The Virginia workers were great. Scoring and loading was done by the 4H group from Frederick County Shooting Sports Club headed by Chuck Farmer, his daughter, Morgan sang the National Anthem to start the shoot each morning. The VA Chapter of the 4H ran the cafeteria where we ate lunch daily it was good and the chocolate cake was great. The trap mechanics Steve Huber and Dave Yarbrough kept the traps running and were quick to respond to requests. Gary Funkhouser was everywhere running the trapline and keeping the squad board current, I not sure I could list all the things he did, but we didn’t have to worry.

The West Virginians that worked the shoot were, in no particular order: Chuck Jackson, the PA announcer and split the trophy ordering with Darrel Murray who sets targets, runs shootoffs, gives out trophies when needed, this year he even used the computer for squadding, will wonders never cease. Jim Schad and Nicholas Harden manned the classifying table. After the events Nicholas calculated the shootoffs and trophy winners. Alec and Todd Sauble handed out trophies and took the winners photos, Alec also cashiered during the shoot. Steve Sprout was our front man with the Virginia group, he has had weekly contact with Winchester since the contract was signed last spring he also is in charge of the cashiering. He trained all the cashiers. Russ Lillard, normally on the squadding table, got a field promotion to cashier when Bill King who has squadded for several years brought in and trained Larry Lilley on the squadding computer, Larry was also seen handing out trophies Saturday while Todd and Alec attended a wedding. Scott Ross squadded as well. Toot Riggle handled the other squadding computer, everyone in the office helped check score sheets for Debbie Harden to enter the scores. Also during the shoot she posted score sheets on the board, squadded and cashiered when we were out of the office shooting. She also ran reports for the squad hustler, printed scoresheets for the scorers and ran options masterfully despite her first use of the system. These are the people along with Winchester Gun Club crew that made the West Virginia State Shoot a success at a new venue. I got a lot of positive feedback and thanks from a lot of people and we appreciate it.

Terry Groves and Danny Nagle need your prayers as they go through some medical issues, Terry was at the shoot when he fell and “there was a break within all the damage in Terry’s leg. The MRI and CT scan also showed that the cancer has returned and is in his spine.” Danny was operated on for a brain tumor. I’ve included there address’ here so you can send a card or note I know they would like to hear from you :
