2012 WV State Shoot Story

David Slusher WV Singles Champion, Erich Reger Captures Handicap, Bob Harden garners second Doubles Crown, Scott Ross Repeats HAA and Michael Kemp HOA Champion.

 

David Slusher, Fred Dague and Mike Kemp all blasted 199’s to tie for the WV Singles Championship. After a shoot-off, David Slusher was crowned WV Singles Champion.  Mike Kemp took the runner-up spot and Fred Dague the WV Sub-Vet category.

Last year’s Doubles and Singles Champion, Scott Ross and 2008 Doubles Champion and last year’s Doubles runner-up, Robert Harden, headed for the shoot-off trap after both breaking 97’s in the Doubles event with Harden claiming his second WV Doubles Championship and Ross the runner up title.

Erich Reger posted the lone resident 97 in Sunday’s Handicap for top WV Handicap Honors and tied Scott Ross for HAA. Scott went on to earn the HAA adding it to his 2011 and 2010 HAA titles. New shooter Rob Ingram, broke 95 to win the runner-up spot in the Handicap Championship event. Mike Kemp topped all West Virginians to claim High Over All.

Preliminary Days:

Five shooters broke a hundred apiece on Thursday’s Scott Ross Singles: Daryl Farmer, Mark Isner, Michael Kemp, John McMahon and Brant Snively. After Fridays carry over, Mike as High Gun, Mark Class AA, John took Junior, Brant Sub Veteran and Daryl Veteran. Daryl Farmer during Saturday’s Championship Singles shot his 100,000th ATA registered target, Daryl also won Fred Dague’s Earlybird 1,000 shoot-off for a great Shamrock shooting bag. PA.’s Bruce Malone crushed 97 targets to win the Neil Leput Handicap event. Kenneth Mills broke the lone 97 to best all in Thursdays Scott Ross Doubles.

On Friday, Mike Kemp broke another perfect century in the Singles Class Championship. Joe Charnigo also broke the hundred for the Open AA crown, Doug Damron rounded out the third hundred of the day to win Veteran.

Friday’s Handicap Champion William Karwatske carded a field high 97. Friday’s Doubles Class Championship victors were Class AA, Mike Kemp; Class A, Pat Swartz; Class B, Darrell Dowler; Class C, Joshua Vaughan and Class D, Erich Reger.

Open shooter Joe Charnigo broke perfect centuries in Open Class AA Singles, Championship Doubles and from the back fence in Sunday’s Handicap Championship during the weekend. The hundred from the 27 completes his Grand Slam, Joe has broken a hundred in handicap before but, this was his first from the 27.  Second year shooter Ian Fleming smashed the lone 200 for Open Singles Champion laurels.

Jennifer Everett broke a 195 to add her record sixth straight Ladies Champion title sweeping the Lady I category for the week. Five time Lady Champion Sandy Spencer swept the new Lady II category and Alec Sauble smashed a 197 for his 3rd straight Junior’s Singles Championship honor and claimed all WV Junior Trophies. Alec and his Dad, Todd, also won the Open Parent & Child trophy.  Jerry Lawson broke a 198 for the Veteran’s title his second. Howard Longerbeam added a Sr. Vet title to his five Veteran titles. Jared Henderson won all the trophies in the new Junior Gold category. Bob & Nick Harden successfully extend their crowns to three straight in WV Parent & Child, Nick also was Open Class B Doubles Champ on Thursday.

Erich Reger, James Marcum and Jerry Lawson are primarily skeet shooters  who attend the State trapshoot shoot for fun. James, Handicap Champion in 2008  won the shoot-off for Fred Dague’s Early Bird Giveaway, Jerry Lawson in 2009 was the Singles Veteran Champion and this years’ Handicap Champion  Erich Reger have decided to become more serious about shooting trap in the future. 

Second year Aim Shooter Malinda Kovac won several Sub-Junior trophies and her father, Paul, donated a large screen monitor for use in the clubhouse scoreboard, Thanks Paul!

This year’s shoot was another success with 1,353 entries. Despite the weather forecasts’ it rained only briefly on the trap line. Thanks to Darrel Murray, Brant Snively and Smitty for their expert target setting despite the unpredictable wind.

A big thanks to Jason Kokosinski who was presented a Certificate of Appreciation at the state meeting for his spectacular work in getting the grounds, trap staff, kitchen staff and generally being every where there was a need. Jason also shot his first registered targets during Saturday’s Singles Championship.

A vote was taken during the Saturday WV ATA Association meeting and the state daily fee was increased from $1.50 to $2.00 beginning the next target year.
