It was the Best WV State Shoot ever…..almost!!!!

The 2014 WV State Shoot is over! You will find the winners listed below and the shoot summary,  photographs are l

ocated in the image galleries to the left.

All was ready, the grounds of Brooke County Sportsman & Farmers Association were immaculate. Rain earlier in the week had everything green; all was ready, the only thing to do was to wait for Thursday, Jason Kokosinski and his group of loyal workers had every thing in tip top shape and looking good. The largest trap range in WV is located on McAdoo Ridge in Wellsburg, West Virginia having double the traps of any other range in the state it is the only facility that can host the WV State Shoot and has since 1989 and we would like to thank them for their hospitality over the last 26 years and especially recognize past tournament directors like Tom Weaver, Cecil Hauck and of course the current director Jason Kokosinski for their fine work and Brooke County Sportsman & Farmers Association for their support of trapshooting. The club has made upgrades to the facility over the years for the shooters and campers, with more upgrades slated for 2015.

We had 1222 entries and throwing a total of 139,400 targets with shooters from 10 states; new to the WV State Shoot were couples from Rhode Island, Ronald Nelson & his wife and New Jersey, Bruce & Monja Crandall as well as new shooters; the Kelly family Dad Darin, daughter Madison  and son Montgomery attended their first WV State Shoot. Darin won a drawing for one of the five annual memberships that Fred Dague gave away, but Montgomery was the first to win a trophy, WV Singles Champion Sub Junior.

HoF Inductee Gary Holmes & Darin Kelly

Bill and Judy Judy brought their son Robert to his first WV State Shoot and he went home with a lot of hardware, in the Michael Kemp Doubles Robert won Open Junior honors, D class in Friday’s Singles, Open Junior in the handicap, and D class in the doubles; Resident Junior in the Championship Singles Saturday and the Championship Doubles as well as the Championship Handicap, picking up winnings along the way to help defray the cost of shooting.

Robert Judy

The Kevin Miller Singles began with 110 shooters. Gary Holmes, Todd Sauble and Doug Damron blasted 100 straights. After carry over, Gary Holmes was crowned Open High Gun with Todd Sauble and Doug Damron taking AA and Vet respectively.

In the Scott Ross Handicap David Cavanaugh, Bill King Jr., Donald Lafollette and George Bartholomew all broke 97 and after George opted for Sr Vet honors and the three others went to the shoot off trap with David claiming the win.

Riley Denes broke a 96 for top Honors in the Junior Category.

Riley Denes                       Another Riley was on hand along with her mother Terry Kemp, Michael missed the State Shoot this year because of a new job. He was missed.

Ian Fleming, Richard Granatir and Kevin Miller all shot 98’s in the Michael Kemp Doubles. After the carryover Ian was High Gun, Rich and Kevin falling back to their respective AA and A classes, 82 shooters competed.

The Class Champions for Friday are listed in the table below however one shoot-off was particularly entertaining, the Saubles’, Todd and son Alec tied for Class B doubles each with an 89. Todd wanted to carryover but Alec, sensing that dad might be wearing down in the late hour, said “Let’s Shoot-off”. Todd dropped two targets on his first post with Alec only down one, both broke all targets on the next station, Alec drops one on his 3rd and 4th post while Todd runs his next two stations. Todd, up one on Alec, appears to tighten up and loses a second target letting Alec back in and both miss a second target on the last post to tie the score and go another round. In the second shoot-off Alec appears to have the upper hand after two posts with his dad down 3 and Alec only one, they each drop one on their 3rd and 4th posts, all Alec has to do is break 3 of the next 4 to wrestle B Class from his dad and only break 2 to stay in it. Alec blasts all four and lifts his gun in triumph. Conflicting reports the next day has Alec spending the night outside the trailer in a lounge chair. This could not be confirmed, however, Todd was seen cleaning what appeared to be smudges, as if someone was looking in, from the camper picture window.

Update!! On Alec's return to the Southern Zone Mrs. Sauble accompanied him and Todd didn't arrive until Saturday afternoon. Hmmmm.....one can only assume Alec got to sleep in the camper all week at the Southern Zone.

Bobby Meadows Class C Doubles     Terry Groves Class C Singles

Bobby Meadows and terry Groves both out of Fayette Gun Club went home with trophies.

Saturday's Singles Championship was contested under a beautiful summer day in Wellsburg, WV. 186 shooters started the 200 bird competition. Todd Sauble, well rested, and two time Singles Champion and 1994 WVHOF inductee Darrel Murray both carded 198's to top the field. After the shoot off, Todd was crowned 2014 WV Singles Champion with Darrel taking Sub Veteran. Todd also won, along with Darrell Dowler, one of the two life memberships donated by Mark Isner and Brooke County Sportsman and Farmers Association.

Singles Runner up was Brooke County’s Tournament Director and relatively new shooter of just three years, Jason Kokosinski, after defeating Bob Harden in a shoot off. Jason later said that he was nervous during his first ever shoot-off. If he was, he hid it well as he smoked 25 targets to relegate Harden to Class AA after Bob left one unbroken. Jason had to climb down from the roof of a shelter where he was repairing a broken speaker for the shoot-off.

Jason Kokosinski Runner up                        Steve Bell Class A                       Morgan Lough Class B

Donald Lafollette Class C                  Sandy & Lonnie Spencer

Class A singles winner was Steve Bell.  Morgan Lough took B Class. Donald Lafollette had the high score in Class C and Lonnie Spencer carded a 181 for D Class laurels. Lonnie and Sandy Spencer also claimed WV Husband & Wife.

Seven time Lady's Champion Jennifer Everett nearly swept the Lady I Category all week for her 8th consecutive Lady's Singles Championship, Lady II winner, Sandra Spencer, added another Lady II Championship to her already 5 Lady's Championships and 2 Lady II Championship as well as sweeping the rest of the resident Lady II category.

Todd only left 3 of the 400 singles targets unbroken in his first WV Singles Championship the 397 also won him the Stephen N. Harden Memorial Belt Buckle donated by Bob and Nick Harden in his memory, Steve, an avid shooter competed in all forms of target shooting from Trap, Skeet, precision pistol, IPSC to 1000 yd competitions with his Barrett 50 cal., induced Bob to trapshooting in Texas in 1988. Steve a staunch defender of the 2nd Amendment was also a NRA lifetime member.

Junior Gold All American shooter Alec Sauble, in addition to his win over dad, also trophied in 8 events including winning the 2014 Handicap Championship and the over all as well. Robert Lowe shot a 197 for Resident Sr. Vet.. Open Shooters Ron Smith, Flip Jendre and Andrew Zborovsky broke 199's. After a 3 round shoot off Ron was the Open Singles Champion. WV Parent & Child winners Alec and Todd Sauble repeating last years’ win.

Newly weds Susan Haley & Lloyd Ridenbaugh were married just 5 days before the State Shoot we were happy to be their honeymoon destination. See trapshooting is romantic!!!

Sunday's weather was sketchy for the Championship Doubles, the wind was fierce,  but 126 shooters took the line 2 time Doubles Champion Robert Harden broke a 95 to claim his 3rd Doubles title. 2013 Singles Champion Kevin Miller broke only 2 less for the Runner-up spot. In what can only be called a Herculean effort Joe Charnigo displayed his mighty skill and broke 100 straight capturing the Open Doubles Championship, three targets better than the next closest competitor.

The weather continued to deteriorate and finally shooters ran for cover as a huge thunder storm rolled through knocking down trees and the power for miles around. After the storm which only lasted about 30 minutes several shooters including Gary Holmes, Steve Bell, Jason Kokosinski and others pitched to connect a generator, offered by Donald Lafollette for the office computer and a large genset, on site for lead recovery and offered by the workers, to power the traps. But in the last minute the Power Company rerouted the power around the downed lines and restored electric to the club, power was lost for only about an hour and fifteen minutes. Handicap resumed and The Handicap Championship was won by Alec Sauble after Bill King and Tom Urquhart didn’t answer the call and falling back to their categories. Besting dad again Todd was Runner up, Donald Lafollette 3rd, Lillard Russell 4th, WVATA President Chuck Jackson 5th and Terry Groves 6th.

We saw some friends that have been absent in recent years they include Charlie Phillips, Darrell Vaught, Brett Fiddler, Frank Wolfe and Harley Barr.

Frank & Darrell catching up
